A former South Charleston High School Air Force Junior ROTC leader charged with sexually abusing children hanged himself in a hotel.
South Charleston Police said investigators in New Jersey are looking into the suicide of Master Sgt. Eddie Smuda.
Smuda was visiting family members in New Jersey and was he was found dead in his hotel room after hanging himself, police said.
Smuda was accused of touching one of his male students inappropriately while alone at his house in Dunbar last summer.
Many of his former cadets defended Smuda and even started a campaign to clear his name, including a Facebook page to gain support.
A court date was set back in November; Smuda was out on bail awaiting more movement in his case before he took his life.
