Frontier Communications Corporation announced Tuesday it had signed a wholesale agreement with Hughes Network Systems, LLC, according to a news release from Frontier.

The news release described Frontier as the largest provider of communications services focused on rural America and Hughes as the global leader in broadband satellite networks and services.

Frontier will distribute satellite-based, broadband services under the mantle of Frontier Broadband and the increased speed and capacity will make it to several thousand households and small businesses in markets that had previously been under-served by all broadband providers, according to Frontier's news release.

"We are very excited to offer a new, high-performance broadband Internet service," Melinda White, executive vice president of revenue development for Frontier, said in a news release. "This is another example of Frontier's unwavering commitment to making broadband access ubiquitous – especially in rural America."

White said in the news release that Frontier chose Hughes because the two companies have a similar vision.

"We are excited to work with Frontier Communications to deliver high-speed Internet access to households in rural America that have traditionally been unserved or underserved," Mike Cook, senior vice president, North American Division for Hughes, said in a news release. "HughesNet Gen4 will dramatically improve performance for high-bandwidth multimedia applications and accelerate web browsing, delivering a media-rich world like never before."

HughesNet Gen4 offers increased performance and capacity, according to Frontier, including support for high-bandwidth applications such as streaming video and music.
