Severe storms have developed across the area, especially across south central Ohio and the Tri-State area.
Stormtracker Chief Meteorologist Spencer Adkins says the line of thunderstorms comes from a system known as a Mesoscale Convective System, or MCS.
"This has the strong winds, possibly up to 60 mph, as well as hail and torrential rains, but it's just not as long in size as the derecho of June 29," said Adkins.
"These systems are actually quite common in summer, but can still do damage to trees and power lines, just like the derecho, but so far we have not seen as many damage reports with this line of storms," he added.
Severe thunderstorm watches were issued until 3 p.m. for south-central Ohio and until 7 p.m. for most of the rest of the 13 News viewing area until 7 p.m. A watch means conditions are right for severe storms to form. A warning means a severe storm is taking place at that moment.
"We just want our viewers to be weather-aware today. They'll likely get a strong gust of wind briefly along with a low shelf cloud, followed a few minutes later by torrential rain and lightning. Just know where your nearest indoor shelter is and be prepared to move there if storms threaten you today," said Adkins.
