A pedestrian struck by a vehicle along U.S. Route 60 in Culloden has died.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas, the victim is a 40-year-old homeless man who was kneeling or laying in the road when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle.

McComas said the man died on the way to the hospital.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the incident, said McComas.

The Cabell County Sheriff's Department is investigating the case.

McComas said that if you think you may have hit someone you should always stop.

"A lot of times people are fearful that people will think they did it intentionally but with investigative techniques and accident reconstruction we can pretty much say definitively say what happened," said McComas.

The victim's name is being withheld at this time pending family notification.
