The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is extending the deadline for comments on a possible emergency litter rule.

According to a press release from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, people now have more time to discuss a rule that would cap land application of poultry and swine litter within three miles of a "primary" poultry breeder property.

The exception would apply to most cases unless the litter has been certified by the State Veterinarian as disease-free.

Primary breeder farms must follow strict regulations to prevent the spread of diseases such as salmonella and avian influenza.

The rule in its entirety can be viewed here. The first public hearing will be August 20 at 6 p.m. at the WVDA's Moorefield Ag Complex. The second hearing will be August 21, at the Greenbrier County Courthouse at 6 p.m.
