Bonnie Newsome has lived along Jennie's Creek Road near the Crum community all her life. She says it's rare to see a law enforcement officer patrolling the area, leaving her and her neighbors feeling like they have been forgotten.
"It makes you feel that why are you voting. Why are you doing your patriotic duty when they don't do it for you," said Newsome.
She said the result of being forgotten is an increase in drug abuse and thefts in her neighborhood. She adds it's gotten so bad her neighbors talk about it in church.
"The people around here, the church-going people, they do live in fear. That's all they talk about in church. They'll get up and testify in the church saying that we need to pray. We need to put Satan on the run," said Newsome.
A spokesman for the Wayne County Sheriff's Department says deputies patrol the area on a regular basis. In fact, two deputies were on a domestic call early in the afternoon, and other deputies were in the area making larceny arrests as well. Still, Newsome believes the sheriff's department needs deputies in this part of town.
"It should be somebody that knows the area and that knows what's going on in the area," said Newsome.
She said that would, at least, give folks some peace of mind.
While deputies say they patrol the area on a regular basis, a spokesman says it may not always be in a marked vehicle.
