School board meeting closed for Edgewood Elementary 'finances' discussion

A closed door meeting about the new Elementary school on Charleston's West Side is no cause for alarm, according to Kanawha County School Superintendent Ron Duerring.

The Kanawha County School Board chose to go in to executive session to talk about the new school-of-the-future under construction on Edgewood Drive during its Tuesday meeting.

School board members cited 'finances' as the reason, but said there's nothing shady about what they did.

Duerring wouldn't go into detail but said the board has every right to talk about advanced construction plans, or anything that would financially affect the Edgewood site in private.

The new state-of-the-art elementary school will bring in kids from both Watts and J E Robins Elementary Schools.

He said there's also some wiggle room for kids who don't live in the area zoned for the new school to attend under the county's open door policy.

"We have an open door policy for people to transfer if there's room in to those schools, so that's not unusual. We've had that for years and years here, an open door transfer policy based on the availability of room," he said.

The building's foundation should be laid by the late spring or early fall of next year.

The county hopes to welcome its first class of Edgewood Elementary students by the fall of 2014.
