West Virginia received a major disaster declaration from President Barack Obama in response to the June 29 through July 1 storms across the region.
Now the state is seeking federal assistance for individuals and businesses to help them recover from the storms that struck the region June 29 through July 10.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin requested assistance on Thursday from several federal programs. If approved, it would include disaster unemployment assistance, legal services and supplemental food assistance, as well as Small Business Administration loans.
"The storms were unlike any weather event we'd ever faced, and they affected nearly every family and business in the West Virginia. People across the Mountain State had damage to structures and lost food, wages and medicine," said Tomblin in a news release. "We have spent the last several weeks assessing the damage and gathering the data needed for this request, and it is clear that we have many folks who need this help."
The federal government already has granted a disaster declaration for West Virginia, which will cover emergency work, repair and replacement of public facilities in 45 counties for damage sustained in the June 29 storms.
