A Huntington woman has met the requirements to run for governor as a write-in.

Barbara Spurlock, who lives in the city's Westmoreland area, filed with the Secretary of State on July 27. She filed as an independent, but said she is a registered Republican.

Spurlock said she would focus on women, children and the elderly.

"I will call attention to the downtrodden residents who have been either bullied by the system or programs now in place," Spurlock said. "Namely, my goal is to see 'equal pay for equal work' for all people. My special interest is for battered women/children, health care workers and teachers.

"I am against all who oppose care for the elderly, of which I am now considered."

Spurlock's filing was not yet available on the secretary of state's website. She will face Democratic incumbent Earl Ray Tomblin, Republican Bill Maloney and Mountain Party nominee Jesse Johnson in the Nov. 6 general election.
