CHARLESTON, West Virginia -
So just how much does a trial cost the taxpayers?
In a high profile case like Shawn Lester's, some 200 people were called from around the county to be a part of the jury pool.
Each of them is paid $40 for their time, plus 55 cents per mile they travel to get to the courthouse.
The county spent $8,000 on just the jury pool, with an untold amount spent on gas reimbursement.
The Lester trial was scheduled for six weeks. If it had gone to length, the county would have spent $14,400 on just daily jury stipends.
They were relieved from duty shortly after noon Monday when Lester pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2003 death of Jeannie Patton.
