One building is coming down, but growth is on its way to West Virginia University Institute of Technology's campus in Montgomery.

The demolition of the former co-ed residence hall, a 67,176-square foot building erected in 1969, began July 31.

The Tech Golden Bear Alumni Association is planning to assist the university in fundraising for a new campus gateway sign, which will repurpose 5,000 salvaged bricks from the residence hall.

Two different structural assessments of the facility determined that it would need to be razed. Plans are under way, according to the university, to develop the vacant lot into a green space for other campus activities.

"We are excited about the continued progress on campus and look forward to the additional recreational space for our students," WVU Tech CEO Carolyn Long said in a news release.
