NELLIS -

Dilapidated and dirty houses create an eye sore for neighbors in the Nellis community.

"I wish it'd get cleaned up," said retired coal miner Luther Smith. "This used to be the best neighborhood in West Virginia."

Smith's neighborhood has two of a select few properties in Boone County. Properties that are being targeted by the Abandoned and Dilapidated Property Board, a group made up of county employees just two years old.

The county is taking severely dilapidated property that has been ignored for years and turning them over to the prosecutors office, who will in turn put liens and other legal restrictions on the property.

"We have given people the benefit of the doubt, but it's at the point where we need to get a little more aggressive here," said Solid Waste Director Rick Kirk. "'We'd like everyone to do what they can before it gets to this point."

So far, more than a dozen homes have turned over to the prosecutor, with more expected.
