Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, D-W.Va., has ordered flags lowered to half-staff on Wed., Aug. 1. Services are being held for Sergeant Benjamin Eric Sites, who died on July 27, in Morgantown, while on active duty with the U.S. Army.
"Throughout Sergeant Sites' military career, he embodied the admirable tradition of patriotism through selfless service that so many West Virginians have displayed throughout our State's and nation's history," said Tomblin in a news release from his office on Tuesday. "Joanne and I offer our sincerest condolences and extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Sergeant Sites' family and friends."
Sites graduated from West Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State University. He began his military career in 2004, according to a news release. Sites served as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, was assigned to the 53rd Explosive Ordinance Disposal Company as an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Specialist, served a tour of duty in Iraq, and through his distinguished service earned the rank of Specialist. Sites was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Full military rites will be conducted by an Honor Guard from Camp Dawson, Kingwood, on Aug. 1.
