High school football coaches being careful about high temperatures

Posted: Updated:

High school football practice is already underway, and with those temperatures in mind, coaches are taking the extra steps to keep players safe.

Some parents say those high temperatures are making this sport dangerous.

Players collapsing and even dying from over-exertion aren't uncommon.

In the last week, two players, one in New York and the other in Miami, died during their high school practice.

Coaches are saying it's all about being cautious and taking it easy in the heat.

"We had some trainers come in over the summer and we did it during most of the heat of the day, so hopefully they are prepared for it. Their bodies are a little bit used to it, but what we do is normal, we have planned breaks but our kids are able to get water whenever they need it," says head George Washington High School football coach Steve Edwards.

Typically, coaches will suspend practice if the temperatures reach highs over one hundred degrees.
