HURRICANE -
It's been a month since high winds and storms swept a path of destruction across the region.
Hurricane city leaders believe they weathered the storm well but want to be ready for the next weather event.
Mayor Scott Edwards says the city is applying for $250,000 in federal and state grants to purchase such things as two-way radios, portable emergency lighting, portable traffic lights, ice making machines, fuel storage, chain saws, meals ready to eat, cots and blankets and generators.
"Generators are definitely the most important like large generators to take care of city hall, the fire department and the senior center. We feel those three locations in the city would be a center point for people to come to shelter," said Mayor Edwards.
The effort is to be more self-sufficient during the next weather emergency. Mayor Edwards said some city money has already been set aside to begin purchase the items. The city should find out this fall if they will receive the grants.
