West Virginia is adding a commemorative coin to the celebratory mix for its 150th birthday, the commission overseeing the sesquicentennial activities announced Saturday.
West Virginia played host to the annual meeting of the Southern Legislative Conference earlier this week, and House of Delegates Speaker Rick Thompson said the event was a success.
Thompson, who is serving as chairman of the SLC this year, said hosting the conference was a lot of work, but it was worth it.
"I am extremely proud of the four-day event we were able to provide for the members of the Southern Legislative Conference," Thompson said.
The event brought together members of 13 southern state legislatures at the Charleston Marriott and Charleston Embassy SuitesJuly 28 through Aug. 1 for a variety of workshops and educational trips. The event also brought to town West Virginia natives Homer Hickam and Jennifer Garner, as well as Mark Kennedy Shriver. Visitors were treated to a fireworks show on the Capitol lawn, a West Virginia Power baseball game and concert at Haddad Riverfront Park by the popular Davisson Brothers band.
But members of the conference also gave back to the community. As part of the Mark Norris Campaign Against Hunger, participants assembled 20,000 meals that were distributed to the Mountaineer Food Bank and Huntington Area Food Bank. Both facilities' inventories dropped dramatically low after a derecho hit the area June 29, resulting in power outages that caused many families' food to spoil.
"Our staff volunteers arranged a host of instructional and recreational visits for conferees and their family members. It was a lot of work, but very gratifying for all of us to see so many people who had never been to West Virginia gain an appreciation of what our state has to offer," Thompson said.
Next year's SLC annual meeting will take place in Mobile, Ala.
