CHARLESTON -
Century Aluminum's rate hearing at the West Virginia Public Service Commission closed just before noon Wednesday after three days of evidentiary hearings and testimony.
The day was closed by comments on the stand from Karen Gorrell, spokeswoman for Century Aluminum retirees.
"I heard each of you in your opening statements talk about the retirees," Gorrell said. "Trust me, we didn't want to be here. We didn't want to be in the middle of all of this, and we don't want to be any part of the determination in this case.
"We need our benefits, but we're good, moral people, and we need this to be fair for all."
Gorrell said the retirees took a hit to their benefits several years ago during negotiations for the good of the Ravenswood community.
"Let's put this together, get the plant open and join hands together and watch that parking lot fill up," she said.
Testimony Wednesday focused on a revised plan from Appalachian Power, which the company clarified several times was not a new proposal but rather a response to PSC Chairman Michael Albert's request that Appalachian Power try one last time to come up with a compromise to establish an electricity rate for Century.
All briefs in the case are due to the PSC Aug. 22, and a decision on Century's power rate is expected some time in September.
