Police officers across West Virginia are stepping up their patrols as part of the Governor's Highway Safety Target Red Campaign.
South Charleston police are participating the program throughout the month of August. Officers said they're primarily patrolling problem intersections.
Police said red light and stop sign violations are among the leading causes of crashes in West Virginia and across the country.
"If you're in the city of South Charleston, and you do run a red light, there's a good chance that one of our officers is going to be out, this month," said Capt. Daniel Johnson, the South Charleston Police Department. "And there's a good chance you will get a citation."
The goal of the campaign is to reduce traffic crashes at intersections, according to police, as a result of people hitting the gas when the light turns yellow and red.
