A Charleston man charged with trying to sell cocaine pleaded guilty in a federal court.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Richard Lamar Banks, 33, of Charleston, pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

According to a press release, Banks gave an associate 10 ounces of cocaine to sell around Charleston in early 2012. In March 2012, he met his associate, who was acting as a confidential informant, to get his cut of the cocaine sale.

Once the transaction was made, officers arrested Banks and located the money underneath a railroad truss bridge.

Banks could see up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. His sentencing is Nov. 7, 2012.
