CHARLESTON, WV -
The West Virginia Primary Care Association recognized two members of the West Virginia Senate Aug. 2 during its annual health care conference in Charleston.
The inaugural Distinguished Community Health Champion Award was presented to Senate President Jeff Kessler, D-Marshall, and Sen. Ron Stollings, D-Boone.
Kessler, who has spent 15 years in the Legislature, said he was humbled by the award.
"However, my continued efforts in the Legislature to increase access to care throughout West Virginia pales in comparison to the tremendous work of our health care providers in our community health centers," Kessler said in a news release.
Stollings, who serves as chairman of the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee, has been in the Senate since 2006.
"There are many challenges related to primary care and the solutions necessary to bring about successful health care outcomes," Stollings said in a news release. "However, I will continue to champion the goals of the West Virginia Primary Care Association to improve the state's health care system."
Kessler has supported the state's federally qualified health centers throughout the state and Stollings, a physician, has advocated the advancement of primary care throughout his legislative tenure.
More than 365,000 West Virginians rely on community health care centers, according to information from Kessler's office.
