WVU Healthcare is looking for qualified health science undergraduate students and recent graduates to become scribes in the Emergency Department.
Since last fall, the program has successfully trained 10 scribes. Due to its initial success, the program is expanding and will be hiring more scribes in the fall semester.
A medical scribe documents the entire patient visit into the medical record on the provider's behalf. By focusing solely on the completeness and accuracy of the patient's medical chart, the scribe allows the provider to be more efficient and improve the quality of his or her interaction with the patient.
In many cases, scribes can help create and facilitate quicker and more efficient patient flow through the often overcrowded emergency department.
As students, scribes gain invaluable healthcare exposure in the fast-paced environment of the emergency room. The program not only allows students to "test the waters" of a health career, but also provides the scribe with practical experience that many top medical, physician assistant, nursing and health science graduate schools seek in a qualified applicant.
Scribes are comprehensively trained in medical terminology, basic anatomy, clinical documentation procedures and much more before being released to train in the emergency department.
WVU Healthcare employs its scribes through a contracted agency, eScribe Management Services. Applications are currently being accepted. Online training for new scribes begins once selected, followed by four to six weeks of on-the-job training at WVU's Ruby Memorial Hospital throughout the fall semester. There are limited spots available.
Interested undergraduates and recent graduates should be pre-med, nursing, pharmacy or honors students with grade point averages preferably of 3.5 or better.
Applicants also must be available to work at least two shifts a week, possibly including night, weekend and holiday hours, depending on the individual student's academic schedule.
Due to the lengthy training required, the position requires a one-year commitment.
