The National Federation of the Blind of West Virginia held their 2012 convention in Barboursville.

On Saturday, they had a guest speaker, who is a New York Times best selling author. Michael Hingson spoke of his experience during the 9/11 attacks. He was on the 78th floor of the north tower and was taken to safety with the help of his seeing eye dog, Roselle. His overall message at the convention was about equality and helping people to understand what it is like to be blind.

"The concept of saying blind people can not be productive or members of society performing equally and having the same responsibilities, is not true. Except the barriers that are put in our way are barriers from people that don't understand blindness or have no sight," said Michael Hingson.

The convention will continue Sunday. The National Federation of the Blind of West Virginia is planning an event to inform the public on equality in the workplace.
