CHARLESTON (AP) -

CHARLESTON (AP) — West Virginia has become a legal battleground over campaign finance just ahead of this year's general election.

One federal lawsuit seeks to remove the state's cap on contributions to independent expenditure political expenditure committees. Another pair of cases, meanwhile, takes opposing positions regarding whether a Supreme Court candidate can receive additional public funding.

A U.S. District Court judge could rule this week on whether to block the contribution cap temporarily, while that challenge is pending. The state Supreme Court is expected to act once it receives replies by Thursday regarding the public financing program's so-called rescue funds.

But a relative handful of prior court rulings could help decide all of these cases. They include a series of far-reaching U.S. Supreme Court decisions focused on campaign finance laws.
