Flash flood watch issued for parts of WOWK viewing area

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service has issued Flash Flood Watches for the remainder of Sunday for Lawrence County, Ohio, all of Eastern Kentucky and most of West Virginia in the WOWK viewing area.

While there is a small potential for severe storms with damaging winds according to the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma, the focus in the later portion of Sunday will be heavy rain.

"We had rain in the morning and the clouds are really hanging tough in many regions, which cuts the wind threat down when afternoon storms develop," said Stormtracker chief meteorologist Spencer Adkins.

"But we do expect more rain to form and move slowly across the area with a cold front.  With all of this humidity, it's not out of the question to see those poor drainage areas back up, causing some flash flooding in spots, he added.

According to the most recent United States Drought Monitor, nearly all of the WOWK viewing area has been removed from being termed "abnormally dry" due to several rounds of heavy rain since the derecho storm of June 29.  Both Charleston and Huntington officially saw over 7.5 inches of rain at the airport locations in the month of July.  Some areas saw several more inches at non-official recording stations.  Only sections of southeast Ohio are listed as "abnormally dry" or "moderate drought."

The Stormtracker meteorologists are on duty and watching any potential storm developments all weekend.
