I-77 could get cable barriers in the future

Posted: Updated:

Interstate 77 could get a makeover.

The Division of Highways is looking at highways all over the state that see their fair share of accidents.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department has responded to dozens of car accidents on I-77 in the past few months.

The DOH said cable barriers are something its considering for I-77.

"They prevent a vast majority of cross over accidents because once a car leaves the roadway, especially in the median, and is headed in the other direction, nothing good happens from there," said Brent Walker, spokesperson for the DOH.

Walker said cable barriers take a lot of money to install.

He said a study of I-77 would take between 90 to 120 days to complete.
