Steelworkers Union says Constellium strike a last resort

Posted: Updated:

RAVENSWOOD (AP) — A United Steelworkers official says a strike at Constellium Rolled Products in Ravenswood is a last resort to show that the union wants a fair contract.

About 700 members of Local 5668 went on strike at 12:01 a.m. Sunday after negotiations broke down.

United Steelworkers District 8 director Billy Thompson says in a news release that the union wants to resume negotiations.

Constellium says the Local 5668 negotiating committee wouldn't allow union members to consider its latest contract offer. The union says the company rejected its latest proposal.

Both sides say health care coverage is a major issue.

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller on Tuesday called on the union and the company to keep the lines of communication open.
