Huntington High School was awarded $10,000 for a success incentive program.

The program named, "Incentives for Success: Rewarding At-Risk Students for Improving their Performance," will focus on at-risk youths already in the county's truancy court program and students who have failed required courses for graduation, according to a press release from Huntington High School.

"The purpose of the grant is not to reward students for doing what we expect but to show the students how much we care about them, "said Steve Freeman, a graduation coach at HHS. "Most at-risk students are not given positive reinforcements but punishments when they do something incorrect."

Students participating in the program will be expected to increase their GPA gradually throughout the year in hopes of making Honor Roll for the sixth and final six weeks. The student must also have an individual attendance rate of at least 95 percent for each grading period.

Upon meeting the criteria, students will have multiple opportunities to win prizes. In the press release, Asst. Principal Lauren Werthammer stressed that the ultimate goal of the program is to create a rise in graduation rates.
