Advantage Toyota High School Football Preview: South Charleston

Posted: Updated:

Last four years have been a roller coaster ride for South Charleston after multiple trips to the post season and a pair of state championships, the Black Eagles were grounded last year, finishing with a disappointing 5 and 5 record.

"It's rough going 5-5 after going to the playoffs for so many years and having a championship ring," South Charleston senior guard Garett Walls said. "I want to get there back. I feel like this team is dead set on going to the championship. "

But after six days of practice...this South Charleston squad is already shaping up to be completely different.

"I tell you what, there will be no excuses here at South Charleston this year," South Charleston Head Coach John Messinger added.  "We expect to be back at it and be back at the place where we are accustomed to be."

South Charleston senior tailback and receiver Trevond Reese couldn't agree more with coach. "Last year we went through some growing pains," Reese said.  "This year you can tell that people know what they are doing and are ready for the season."

Last year I don't think we had the same mentality, the same championship mentality that we did in year's past, the championship years," Walls added.

The Black Eagles returns 15 starters including quarterback Jon Alexander and many of their skilled position players.  And those kids just might be of the fastest in the Kanawha Valley.

"Ff you look at Jon's numbers from last year, Jon was right up there with the leaders in the conference and in the state, Messinger said.  "So, If he can improve on his numbers and we get a cast to surround him, we'll be in pretty good shape."

While the long term goal is to make it to Wheeling, the Black Eagles are focused on their first game of the season vs. county rival George Washington.

We're due for a win against G.W.," Reese said.  "We haven't beat them since my freshman year so we're really looking forward to that game. Should be a good one."
