West Virginia's efforts to improve your child's eating habits is attracting national attention.
In fact, the administrator for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service stopped at Piedmont Elementary School in Charleston on Tuesday morning. Audrey Rowe toured the school's breakfast program. "There's a lot of brain research around the importance of good nutrition and performance in school. As educators and as community members, we have to be concerned about whether or not we're providing children with the food they need, and we have to be concerned that not just for some of the kids, but for all of the kids," said Rowe during her visit.
West Virginia is one of seven states participating in a federal program that provides nearly 90,000 students in West Virginia the chance to eat breakfast and lunch at schools like Piedmont, at no cost.
"This is a community effort. It takes the leadership from the schools, it takes the school personnel, it takes the students but it also takes the parents," said Rowe.
West Virginia plans to expand its free breakfast and lunch program to 282 schools in 35 counties.
