Charleston YWCA plans annual 'Girls Night Out'

Posted: Updated:

Miss West Virginia and hundreds of women are planning to attend the 14th annual Girls Night Out fundraiser. It's being held on Aug. 9 at 6 p.m.at the Sunrise Mansion law offices of Farmer, Cline & Campbell in Charleston.

WOWK 13News anchor April Kaull will also be serving as a greeter at the event. WOWK is proud to be a partner with the YWCA to support this project.

The event raises money for the YWCA's Resolve Family Abuse Program and Hope House. It provides shelter and services for victims of domestic violence and their children. More than $850,000 has been raised since the event began in 1998 and event organizers hope to reach their goal of $1 million this year. The YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program offers services for families in Kanawha, Clay and Boone counties.

The theme for this year's event is "Time to Shine" and celebrates the YWCA Charleston's 100 years of providing social services to women and their families in Charleston and surrounding areas. "As the YWCA celebrates a century of service to the communities they serve, the Time to Shine theme seemed so appropriate," said Paige Payne in a news release from the YWCA. "Throughout the century, the women of the YWCA have been helping other women and their families overcome obstacles they face to become independent and self-sufficient. It just goes to show that when women come together, united in their or mental abuse."

The event will include gift bags for attendees, food and cocktails from local restaurants, a raffle and auction. Musical guests include Taylor Made and Jinny Jacinto. Rosemarie Hunter, owner of Radiant Skin Therapy, will provide make-up and hair touch-ups. Karen Farmer, a co-chair for the event, said that while Girls Night Out is fun, it's also about raising awareness about domestic violence. "West Virginia has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the nation and people are shocked by the abuse against loved ones," said Farmer in a news release. "This event gives people a chance to get involved, show their support, and celebrate women helping women with power, passion and purpose. Together, we are helping victims become victorious."

Guests must be at least 21 years of age. Reservations can be made online at www.ywcacharelston.org or by contacting Sarah Reed at 304-340-3557 or sreed@ywcacharleston.org.
