MSU provides counseling sessions for students after accreditation withdrawal

Posted: Updated:

Advisors and counselors were on hand in Beckley Tuesday to help Mountain State University students decide where to go with their college careers.

Students must decide where to go after the Higher Learning Commission pulled MSU's accreditation earlier this summer. The University of Charleston plans to take over the Beckley institution Jan. 1 when the Commission's accreditation extension ends.

Tuesday, Mountain State University and the University of Academic Advisors, counselors and financial aid representatives talked to students about what's next for their college careers.

Some of the students said they are 50/50 on the whether they thought the program was helpful or just too confusing.

Melissa Rogers was going into her junior year at MSU and said she doesn't want to leave but has to.

"Honestly, if I could have stayed here on this campus that's what I would have like to have done for three years," she said. "But, oh well, I guess its time to move on."

Rogers said she is leaning on going to Bluefield State College to enroll in their radiology and technology program.

Christian Chambre is an MSU student who admits to feeling let down.

"I think this whole process is defeating," he said. "So what can you say, it is what it is. You try to push on and try to accomplish something with what you got."

Chambre said he is still trying to figure out what to do with the credits he has completed and still needs to finish.

Leaders with the University of Charleston plan to be at Mountain State University's Martinsburg campus Thursday to meet with students there about what's next for them.
