Janelle Sperry, a resident of Bunker Hill, W.Va., is one of 12 chosen as a Champion of Change by the White House. She is President of the Mill Creek Intermediate Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Sperry is one of 150 PTA leaders coming to the White House Friday, Aug. 10, for day-long hearings. The Champion of Change nominees will be honored that same day.

The Champion of Change award was created to reward volunteers across the U.S., with different sectors being rewarded each week.

"President Obama knows how important parent involvement is in education, and we are excited to welcome PTA leaders who are setting such great examples in their communities to the White House," said Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the president, in a news release.

"The PTA Champions of Change we are honoring have collaborated with school administrators and community leaders, launched innovative advocacy campaigns, and worked tirelessly to grow their local PTAs to involve more parents in their children's education," she said.

Sperry first got involved with volunteering in schools through the Bunker Hill Elementary School PTA. She serves on the Berkeley County Council PTA and the WV PTA as the Scholarship Chairperson. Sperry is also the Technical Director for the Berkeley County Schools Scholarship Pageant.
