Ohio is trying to understand what drives young girls and women to sex trafficking with a study released Wednesday by the state Attorney General's office.

The study, which took more than a year to complete with interviews with 328 sex trafficking victims, found that one-third of women involved in sex trafficking started before the age of 18.

According to a news release, many of the self-reporting victims said they were recruited into the sex trafficking trade by other women. Around half said they had friends that were involved in the trade, and 47 percent said they were raped around one year prior to joining the trade.

Attorney General Mike DeWine said the report was commissioned to learn what causes women to join the sex trafficking trade, and how to stop it.

"The Ohio Attorney General's Office asked the commission to go out into the community and talk with human trafficking victims," said DeWine.  "Because of this report, we now have more insight into who is more likely to get trafficked and how to prevent it."

Some of the recommendations include identifying sex trafficking as child abuse in Ohio law, an added focus on arresting buyers, using schools to fight sex trafficking, and having a better response to runaway youth.
