Saturday, Aug. 11 is 811 Day, the day the West Virginia Public Service Commission is using to promote their 811 number.

The PSC is taking part in National 811 Day, which encourages people and businesses to call 811 to find out where utility lines are before digging.

When 811 is called, the utility companies are contacted about the dig. Workers with the utility companies come out to the potential dig site and mark where the utility lines are.

"On Aug. 11 and throughout the year, we remind homeowners and professional contractors alike to call 811 before digging to eliminate the risk of striking an underground utility line," said Michael Albert, Chairman of the PSC in a news release.

"It really is the only way to protect citizens working in their yards, as well as the utility lines buried underground," he said.

The importance of calling 811 was demonstrated yesterday when a construction company accidentally cut two Frontier Communications cables lines, leaving more than 7,000 without phone and Internet service.
