West Virginia is another step closer to putting a fleet of natural gas-powered vehicles on the roads.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced on Friday that the bids for the 2013 statewide motor vehicle contract will include compressed natural gas fueled vehicles.
The governor's Natural Gas Vehicle Task Force made the request, according to a news release. The contract includes 36 vehicles of various shapes and sizes. Of those, 10 will be fueled by compressed natural gas.
"The Natural Gas Vehicle Task Force had asked I consider requiring the upcoming state vehicle fleet contract to include CNG fueled vehicles," said Tomblin in a news release from his office. "This morning the contract is officially out to bid, putting us one step closer to our goal of using the abundant clean-burning natural gas produced right here in West Virginia to fuel our state fleet."
The task force is looking at a number of issues surrounding natural gas including producers, infrastructure developers, vehicle manufacturers, and fueling options across the state.
The contract bid is in the Friday, Aug. 10, West Virginia Purchasing Bulletin. The Purchasing Division will hold a pre-bid conference Aug. 22 and the bid opening is scheduled for Sept. 6.
