Great Kanawha River Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8

Posted: Updated:

The 23nd annual Great Kanawha River Cleanup is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 8.

It's sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. The cleanup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon.

A number of cleanup sites are being coordinated along the Kanawha River, including the beach at the Winfield Locks, Roadside Park in St. Albans, Magic Island in Charleston, and Kanawha Falls near Glen Ferris.

Volunteers should register with the DEP so there will be enough supplies for each cleanup location.

The DEP's Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan program will supply bags and gloves for volunteers. The program will also make sure that trash is hauled away from each site.

Last year, more than 100 volunteers collected 3.2 tons of trash and debris as part of the cleanup, according to a news release from the DEP.
