Charleston man charged with stealing from cars

Cabell County sheriff's deputies arrested a man Friday on charges of stealing from unlocked cars at gas stations.

Roy E. Southerlin Jr., 34, of Charleston, was charged with felony false pretenses, forgery and larceny, deputies said. More felony charges may be pending.

Southerlin watched people pay for gas or get groceries and stole purses and items from their cars while they were inside the stations, deputies said. He would then go to Walmart and use the cards.

Southerlin is accused of doing this at least three times in Cabell Kanawha counties, according to deputies.

Deputies have identified a woman they said was with Southerlin and she may also be charged.

Southerlin was arraigned in Cabell County Magistrate Court and bond set at $64,000.

Deputies advise folks to keep close watch on their personal items.
