Two local students won recognition in a video game design competition.
George Washington High School students Austin Susman and Caitlin Moore came in first place at the Globey Awards, which is a gaming design program that engages students across the states.
Susman and Moore created a game that teaches students how to combat bullying.
Dozens of parents, teachers, and students gathered at the Center for Professional Development in Charleston to hear the competition results.
The winners say they knew they wanted to tackle bullying from the beginning.
"We were just sick of it happening to our friends," Moore said. "[Nobody] was bothering to do anything about it."
They submitted their game in a category called, "Civics and News Literacy. "
The third annual Globey Awards was hosted by the World Wide Workshop, a national nonprofit organization that empowers youth to be inventors and leaders in the global knowledge economy through programs including Globaloria, a video game design curriculum and online learning network.
Company leaders said the winners will have a bright future, as computer programming continues to grow as an industry.
