Charleston police are investigating a shooting on Charleston's West Side. Around 7:15 a.m. Saturday, police found the body of John A. Rogers, 36, on the railroad tracks off Madison Street.
Investigators say Rogers, Jr., may have originally hailed from Rand, but they think he had been living in Charleston with his uncle at the time of his death.
Neighbors say they heard shots fired multiple times throughout the night. Detectives say Rogers was shot in the head around 2 a.m. Saturday, just before another shooting occurred only three hours later around the corner from where police found the body.
"We don't have a suspect named at this point, we're just trying to piece together whether the incidents are linked or not and what was going on in the victim's life shortly before he was murdered," said Lt. Steve Cooper with the Charleston Police Department.
Officers say the later incident involved a man who fired a shotgun filled with pellets at a group of people on Madison Street around 7a.m. He hit two women standing nearby. The two women suffered minor injuries and refused medical help. At this point, police say they think the two shootings are unrelated.
Neighbors say crime is nothing new on the West Side. They claim the road along the tracks has become a popular spot for drug dealers.
"I am concerned for my family," said a man who lives near the crime scene. He asked for his name not to be used in fear of retaliation. "I figure I can take care of myself, but stray bullets don't discriminate."
"You just have to keep to yourself and put your faith in the lord really," said another West Side resident, who also asked to remain nameless.
Many agreed that the West Side needs a heightened police presence to stop the violence in a place already ridden with crime.
