Jail committee learns office may have been bugged

Posted: Updated:

A state lawmaker said a bugging device recently was found in an air duct at a Regional Jail Authority office.

The device was found last month in the Charleston office of West Virginia Regional Jail Authority Chief of Operations John Lopez, according to the Beckley Register-Herald.

Delegate David Perry, D-Fayette, said he learned that Lopez found the device after he noticed some residue from a ceiling tile had fallen on his office chair. Perry is a member of the Regional Jail's legislative oversight committee.

Perry said Lopez notified the Charleston Police Department, which turned the issue over to the FBI in Huntington. Perry said he understood that the FBI conducted some interviews on the device.
