HUNTINGTON, West Virginia -
Summer vacation came to an end for nearly 13,000 students in Cabell County this morning.
Today is the first day of school at the county's 28 schools.
At Highlawn Elementary, parents and students met teachers last Thursday during orientation.
Educators said that time was important to cut down on confusion the first day of school.
This morning students and teachers met in the gym before they headed off the class.
"We did the pledge as a school and we talked about the rules," said Robin Harmon, principal of Highlawn Elementary School in Huntington. "I introduced all the teachers and we had a little pep rally so everyone was excited about the first day of school."
The first vacation day for students is Labor Day and the last day of school is scheduled for the last week in May.
