WV DNR to evaluate deer population densities over next few weeks

Posted: Updated:

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will evaluate deer population densities over the next few weeks, according to a news release.

"Monitoring deer population levels is an important component of the 2011-2015 West Virginia White-tailed Deer Operational Plan," Gary Foster, supervisor of DNR game management, said in the news release. "We will be using a method called 'spotlight distance sampling.' It has been used by numerous state fish and wildlife agencies throughout the country to help determine deer population densities and recruitment."

The surveys will focus on randomly selection road where deer have been sighted. Spotlight surveys will wrap up by the middle of September.
