CHARLESTON, West Virginia -
In transcripts of recorded conversations, Shawn Lester responded to jokes about being the Kanawha County sniper saying simply, "I'm retired."
Case files became public after Lester pleaded guilty to second degree murder, in effect, admitting to being in a truck that fired the fatal shot in the Jeannie Patton killing.
Interviews include Rodney Shaffer Junior.
"He hasn't come out and said he was involved, but he said he knows who done it," said Shaffer.
Lester lived at the Shaffer property in Sissonville for some time, and police allege Rodney Shaffer Senior, who died in 2008, may have been involved in the killings.
That property remains destroyed following the Charleston police digging along the property in March 2011 looking for a truck and the murder weapon, believed to be a .22 rifle.
"Anytime they got a new gun, they would go and shoot it," claimed Charles Chase, who still lives on the same 55 acre plot where police looked for clues. "It seemed like the rules didn't apply to [Lester].
Chase said he watched Lester shoot several guns on the property, despite a felony record banning him from handling weapons. Chase also said Lester constantly was doing drugs on the property.
Police investigators asked Chase in 2011 about Gilberto "Tito" Lopez, the Mexican drug dealer who police say was involved in the shootings. Chase said he has never met Lopez.
