Two community and technical colleges are getting a much needed boost from the Dominion Foundation.
According to a press release, West Virginia Northern Community College and West Virginia University at Parkersburg are getting $50,000 grants from the Dominion Foundation. These grants will pay for training simulators.
West Virginia Northern Community College - which has campuses in Wheeling, New Martinsville, and Weirton - will purchase a virtual welding simulator. WVU-P will purchase a hydraulics simulator.
Robert Orndorff, president of Dominion Resources, made the announcement this morning at the Charleston Marriott Town Center. He was joined by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, D-W.Va., and James Skidmore, chancellor of the state Community and Technical College System.
Officials are hoping these simulators help get trained workers into the growing Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling boom.
"As new extraction methods are used in the Marcellus Shale region, advanced welding techniques and an extensive understanding of both mechanical and electrical technology will be necessary," Tomblin said. "In an effort to meet this demand for highly technical professionals, these grants will be used for cutting edge simulators which will allow students to learn in a safe classroom environment."
