Charleston man arraigned on bank embezzlement charges

Posted: Updated:

A man accused in a credit union embezzling scheme was arraigned Thursday in Kanawha County.

Dewayne Spaulding has been charged with bank embezzlement, credit union fraud and financial exploitation of the elderly.

His then girlfriend, Heather Laake, was arraigned on the same charges Wednesday.

Laake is accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from the South Charleston Employees Federal Credit Union.

Prosecutors said she wrote the checks to Spaulding.

They said Laake would change customers account information so they wouldn't notice that money was missing.

The pair is set to go to trial Oct. 22.
