Several West Virginia counties began a new school year on Thursday. That included Jackson County, where students at Ripley Elementary School took part in a special kickoff celebration.

The school welcomed their pupils with an Olympic themed ceremony. They heard inspirational messages about how they can go for the gold in education and be the best they can be. West Virginia Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jorea Marple, also took part in the ceremony to welcome in a new school year.

Students shared some secrets to success. "It's good knowing all of the teachers because when you need help you can just ask any of them," said Brooklyn Board.

Meanwhile, teachers said the first day of the new school year is one of their favorite parts of the profession. "They were so interested in what people were saying. They are eager to be here. Everyone is in their first day of school clothes, all shined and ready to go, and excited to meet their teachers. And we are excited to meet them," said Lori Mahan.
