Government agencies across West Virginia, along with some non-profit organizations, are getting more time to apply for disaster assistance after the June-July storms.
They've received a 30-day extension from the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to a news release.
That means the deadline is now Sept. 21, 2012, to apply for federal aid. This is for public building and infrastructure only, according to the news release. "We're pleased with the extension," said Jimmy Gianato, state coordinating officer for the disaster in the news release. "This will give us more time to make sure that all the applicants in the state have a chance to register and get the assistance they are eligible for."
Under the program, FEMA pays 75 percent of the costs for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairing or replacing disaster-damaged public facilities. Those include bridges, roads, buildings, schools, publicly owned utilities and recreational facilities.
Since the disaster declaration on July 23, FEMA has received 336 requests for public assistance in the 45 eligible counties. The federal government denied a request from West Virginia state leaders for individual assistance. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has said he will appeal that decision.
