Free training for oil and gas industry jobs is available through Pierpont Community & Technical College, the college announced Aug. 17.

"This is an outstanding training opportunity for anyone serious about getting a job in the oil and gas industry," said Paul Schreffler, Pierpont Vice President for Workforce Education.

The training program is made available through Marcellus ShaleNET, a grant program from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.

The ShaleNET floorhand training is a three-week, 120-hour intensive course that certifies and prepares students to work on natural gas and oil rigs at the entry level in the floorhand position.

Students will learn the basic rules of gas industry safety and gain an understanding of the skills gas industry production companies are looking for in new employees.

Students also will become aware of the range and diversity of careers in the gas industry. The course content includes knowledge, skills and certifications in safety, CPR, defensive driving, rig components, rigging systems, well control, hydraulics and basic electrical work.

The program also provides job placement assistance.

The ShaleNET grant covers the cost of tuition, and participants are asked to pay for the required background check and drug screening. Students must submit physical forms signed by their doctors indicating they are fit to work, own steel-toed boots for outdoor work and possess valid driver's licenses. Other safety and instructional materials are provided.

The next training takes place weekdays from Sept. 10 through 28 at Pierpont's Center for Workforce Education in Fairmont.

The registration and screening deadline for the course is Sept. 1. Space is limited.
