WV Attorney General warns elderly of Medicare phone scam

Posted: Updated:

West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw wants to warn the public about a scam involving Medicare.

A company is allegedly making fraudulent telephone calls on behalf of Medicare, according to a news release from his office.

The scammers ask for personal information, including Social Security numbers, to enroll people in Medicare, the news release states. The company will ask for their checking account number and tells the caller that the government needs to send them new Medicare cards or they will not have health coverage.

A group called Elder Watch is a consumer protection partner of the Attorney General's office and has received numerous calls from concerned citizens.

The Attorney General advises people to never give account numbers or social security numbers to anyone who calls asking for it. A legitimate government organization or business will not ask for private information by phone.

People who experience these calls are asked to contact the Attorney General's Office to file a complaint at 800-368-8808 or www.wvago.gov.
