New investigative tool in Putnam County

WINFIELD, West Virginia -

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department has a new tool to aid in investigations.

It's called a "Total Station" and it's similar to surveying equipment.

The device can make traffic accident investigations a little easier.  The "Total Station" system forensically documents scenes and can come in handy when exact measurements are needed.

Besides traffic accidents, deputies can use the devices at crime scenes

"It's more accurate.  It's a lot faster than pulling tape measures and having to write down everything you are doing.  When we have a fatality and the roadway is closed, it could be closed for hours and this could speed up that time," said Corporal David Bailey of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

The Total Station costs $5,000.  It was paid for with grants and county funds.
